3. Traveling With Raw Food

Hitting the road? Raw feeding doesn’t have to take a vacation – but it does need a plan.

Here’s how to manage it safely:

• Use a high-quality cooler or plug-in fridge: Insulated coolers with ice packs work for day trips. For longer journeys, a portable 12V fridge is ideal.
• Pre-portion meals in sealed containers to avoid handling raw meat on the go.
• Bring disposable gloves, paper towels, and sanitizing wipes for clean-up.

For short trips or emergency meals, consider freeze-dried or air-dried raw options as a shelf-stable backup.

4. Feeding Raw Food at the Cottage or Camp

Vacation homes and outdoor adventures require extra diligence:

• Use a dedicated mini fridge or cooler for pet food only.
• Keep raw food stored in shade and off the ground (ideally in a bear-safe bin!).
• Rinse bowls immediately after meals to prevent attracting pests or wildlife.

5. What About Raw Treats and Bones? Handle Them with the Same Care

Raw bones and meaty treats are great additions to your dog’s diet – but they still carry the same safety concerns as full meals, especially during summer.

• Store in the freezer or fridge until it’s time to serve
• Never leave raw bones or treats outside in warm weather – bacteria grows quickly
• Limit chew time in the heat to 15–20 minutes, then discard leftovers
• Wash hands after handling, or use hand sanitizer if on the go
• Disinfect surfaces or floors that came into contact with the treat

Whether it’s a beef knuckle, a rawhide alternative, or a frozen meat snack, always treat raw-based items as perishable and bacteria-prone.
